Two multi-national architecture and engineering firms have been selected to lead the design on a major project which is being delivered at Australia’s busiest airport.

In its latest announcement, Sydney Airport says that it has appointed global architecture practice Grimshaw and international engineering consultancy Mott MacDonald as lead consultants for its T2-T3 terminal link project.

Part of a $6 billion program in capital works that is currently being undertaken at the airport, The T2_T3 terminal link project is the centerpiece of Sydney Airport’s 20-year preliminary masterplan that was released in September.

The masterplan set out a vision for the airport to cater for 72 million annual passengers by 2045 (up from 45.2 million in 2025).

Under the project, the airport’s domestic terminals T2 and T3 will be joined together to create a new integrated precinct (see image below).

This will enable passengers to transfer seamlessly between the two terminals without needing to exit terminal buildings.

The project will include twelve new ‘swing’ gates.

These are boarding gates which are flexible and can ‘swing’ between domestic and international modes.

The initial phase of the project will focus on early design, site surveying and risk identification.

This will help with upcoming approval and planning processes.

The latest announcement is a major achievement for Grimshaw and Mott McDonald – both of whom have extensive experience in aviation design.

In the US, for example, the firms are working together to lead a master plan to redevelop JFK International Airport into a world class airport.

Further announcements regarding the selection of additional consultants and contractors to support Sydney Airport’s capital works program are expected to be made shortly.

Sydney Airport CEO Scott Charlton welcomed the latest appointment.

“Our $6 billion capital program is critical to maintaining an efficient, high-quality experience for airlines and passengers as we grow towards our Master Plan forecast of 72 million passengers a year by 2045,” Charlton said.

“By partnering with world-class firms like Grimshaw and Mott MacDonald we’re strengthening our ability to deliver major projects that support jobs, economic growth and Sydney’s role as Australia’s global gateway.”
