The Commonwealth and NSW Governments have announced that the first stage of the M12 Motorway will open on Saturday.

Set to provide direct access to the new airport when it opens this year, the new road will connect the airport with Sydney’s existing motorway network.

The 16 kilometer dual carriage roadway will connect the Western Sydney International Airport at Badgerys’s Creek to the M7 Motorway at Cecil Hills and The Northern Road at Luddenham.

The project will open in two stages.

The first stage will connect the Northern Road in Luddenham to Elizabeth Drive in Cecil Hills. This will also include a new interchange at the Western Sydney International Airport.

The is being delivered by Seymour Whyte and the CPB Georgiou Group joint venture and will open on Saturday.

The second stage, involving a new M7/M12 Interchange, is being delivered by John Holland and will open mid-year.

All up, the first stage of the project involved:

  • Use of 181,933 cubic metres of concrete, equivalent to 73 Olympic pools
  • 5,217,117 hours worked
  • 10,000 people employed, including 4,900 local workers
  • Completion of more than 2.6 million m³ of earthworks, equivalent to 1,064 Olympic pools
  • Construction of 17bridges
  • Installation of 461 bridge piles
  • Installation of 637 bridge girders
  • Planting of 18,500 trees and more than 1.5 million shrubs and grasses
  • Delivery of 2,320 bridge lineal metres.

Commonwealth Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Catherine King welcomed the opening.

“Sydney’s new airport will connect Western Sydney to the world, and the M12 will play a critical role getting passengers to the terminal, and freight to the tarmac,” she said.
