A leading Queensland engineering, building and urban development company has been chosen to prepare the way for construction of the main stadium for the 2032 Brisbane Olympics.

The Queensland Government has appointed the family owned BMD Constructions to undertake early works for the Brisbane Stadium which is being built at Victoria Park.

Set to open in time for the Brisbane 2032 Olympics, Brisbane Stadium will serve as the main venue for the event.

It will host the opening and closing ceremonies as well as the athletics.

Following the games, it will become the city’s main oval stadium and will be the focal point of major AFL and international and domestic cricket.

It will be the home ground for current AFL premiers the Brisbane Lions as well as cricket’s Brisbane Heat in the Big Bash and Queensland Bulls at interstate level.

It will also serve as a major international cricket venue for Test, One Day and T20 matches.

The venue is being constructed as part of a $7.1 billion Games Venues Infrastructure Program, which is being jointly funded by the Queensland and Australian Governments.

The awarding of the contract comes six weeks after the Queensland Government’s Games Independent Infrastructure and Coordination Authority (GIICA) took possession of the site at Victoria Park on 1 June.

Over the past six weeks, GIICA has been undertaking initial site establishment facilities on the Herston side of the site.

These include the installation of temporary fencing, changes to traffic and transport routes, ongoing site investigations and survey work and the repurposing of some existing buildings into site facilities and offices.

Meanwhile, design work continues to progress whilst the early contractor involvement process is also underway to determine the final builder.

The early works program will begin next month and run into the middle of 2027.

It will include bulk earthworks as well as erosion and sediment controls, haul roads, semi-permanent fencing, stormwater drains, retaining walls and establishment of a logistics plaza.

Founded in Queensland in 1979, the family-owned BMD has grown to become a leading integrated engineering, construction and urban development business.

It is a $2 billion operation which employs more than 2.300 people.

It was selected for the early contractor phase after a two-phase open market procurement process.

This included an Invitation for Prequalification (IFP) which received 22 responses followed by an Invitation to Offer (ITO) in accordance with approved Procurement and Evaluation Plan.

Queensland Deputy Premier and Minister for State Development, Planning and Infrastructure Jarrod Bleijie welcomed the appointment.

“We’re ensuring a Queensland business is delivering for Queenslanders and is an important part of putting the state on the world stage,” Bleijie said.

BMD Group CEO Scott Power expressed excitement about the project award.

“As a Queensland-founded, family-owned business, BMD is proud to deliver the Brisbane Stadium early works,” he said.

“We understand the responsibility that comes with working in a place that means so much to so many Queenslanders.

“Our focus is on working closely with GIICA, the broader project team and the community, drawing on our local workforce, supply chain and civil construction experience to deliver the works with care and a commitment to positive long-term outcomes.”
