Global technology giant Amazon has announced plans to pump $A20 billion ($US 12.98 billion) into beefing up its data centre infrastructure capability in Australia over the next four years.

And the company plans to construct three new solar farms to support the expansion.

On Saturday, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese jointed with Amazon Web Services CEO Matt Garman in the Amazon Sphere facility in Seattle to announce that the company plans to invest $A20 billion into its Australian data centres over the four years from July 2029.

Whilst few details were given, Garman indicated that the money would be used to expand, operate and maintain its data centre infrastructure in Australia.

The company said it would support demand for cloud computing, artificial intelligence, accelerating AI adoption and capability and continued modernisation of enterprises and other organisations throughout Australia.

The investment will more than triple the $9.1 billion which AWS has invested in Australia since it established a presence in Sydney in 2012.

It follows last year’s announcement of a partnership between AWS and the Federal Government to provide a ‘top secret’ AWS cloud to foster innovation in national security and defence and to enhance the nation’s defence and intelligence capabilities.

To provide power to support the energy requirements of the expanded facilities, Amazon also announced plans on Saturday to invest in three new solar farms across Victoria and Queensland.

This will complement the company’s existing investment in eight solar and wind projects across New South Wales, Queensland and Victoria.

These are helping to power Amazon’s Australian operations including both its data centres and its fulfillment centres.

Once all 11 solar and wind projects are operational, they will generate more than 1.4 million megawatt hours of carbon free energy. This is the equivalent of the power usage of around $290,000 Australian homes each year.

Already, Amazon is the third largest corporate purchaser of renewable energy in Australia and is the largest corporate purchaser of renewable energy globally.

This is part of the company’s plans to achieve net zero by 2040.

In a statement, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese welcomed the announcement.

Albanese said that the investment was the largest ever in Australia by a global technology provider.

He says that the investment will provide the world’s most advanced infrastructure that can support complex artificial intelligence (AI) and all other technology applications. This will enable organisations across Australia to train and deploy AI models and to continue to rapidly innovate.

It will drive the development and expansion of data centres in Melbourne and Sydney that include storage, networking, analytics, and other advanced, highly secure services. This in turn will support cloud and AI demand, he said.

“I am pleased to join Matt Garman to announce AWS’s investment of AU$20 billion over five years to further develop and expand its data centers in Sydney and Melbourne,” Albanese said.

“This is the largest investment our country has seen from a global technology provider, and is an exciting opportunity for Australia to build AI capability using secure, resilient infrastructure. This is exactly the kind of economic investment in our nation that we want to see, and creates opportunities for continued innovation and growth. The investment will generate economic opportunity for Australians, including skilled jobs and infrastructure that can support complex AI and supercomputing applications.”

Garman said that the planned investment would expand Amazons commitment to supporting Australian organisations in harnessing opportunities that generative AI offers.

He said that Amazon was proud to support the nation’s vision to be a global AI leader.
