The company whose crane crushed a Melbourne house, forcing three occupants to flee, says it's "devastated" by the incident.

A delicate operation began on Thursday to remove the crane after it collapsed and crushed a Yarraville house while three people were inside on Wednesday afternoon.

Daniel Pantalleresco was at his aunt’s house in Yarraville when the drama unfolded.

“The house started shaking. We just looked over at the side of the house and the roof just caved in. Everything was flying everywhere. And we just screamed ‘run’ and we all just ran out,” he told the Nine Network.

The crane was moving a relocatable home when the incident happened in Schild Street just before 1pm.

Tony Pace, who was at work when his house was crushed, said advanced warning of the work being done would have been appreciated.

“I mean, just a knock on the door to say, ‘Listen guys, we’re going to try and turn the modular home around, do you mind just leaving for an hour or so?” he told 3AW.

“Not even a knock on the door, which I find a bit annoying, actually.”

The company, Reed Logistics Australia, says it is assisting WorkSafe in its investigation.

“We are devastated by the accident, but we are most thankful there was no serious injuries. Our primary concern right now is the affected parties,” it said in a statement.

Two men working on the construction site were treated at the scene for minor injuries.

Police and about 20 firefighters were called to the operation.

Worksafe is in charge of righting the crane and its investigators returned to the site on Thursday to remove it.
