A ban on the use of bore water in a section of Adelaide will be imposed from early next month because of chemical contamination.

The Environment Protection Authority says the ban for suburban Edwardstown will take effect from January 9 and follows extensive testing.

The EPA did not detail the nature of the contamination but said the chemicals were of concern and use of the groundwater could cause health issues.

“Contamination in groundwater can remain for many decades or longer (and) is very difficult to treat,” acting director Andrew Pruszinski said.

“The most effective way to safeguard the community now and for future generations is to ensure the exposure pathway is removed.”

Anyone using bore water from the contaminated area faces a maximum fine of $8000.
