Leading global contractor Brookfield Multiplex has completed work on Macquarie Group’s new global headquarters at 50 Martin Place in Sydney’s CBD, on time.
Prominently located on the corner of Martin Place and Elizabeth Street and above the existing heritage-listed banking chamber occupied by the Commonwealth Bank, the refurbishment has transformed the historic 1928 building into a contemporary commercial office of more than 20,000 square metres over 11 levels.
Brookfield Multiplex undertook significant demolition works, widened the existing atrium, constructed a new two-storey glass-domed roof and bespoke, circular glass shuttle lifts, installed new building services and systems and completed an integrated interior fit out. An internal atrium stairway was also constructed to provide greater interconnectivity and encourage collaboration between employees.
“50 Martin Place was a complex project with plenty of challenges. Site logistics were complicated by the busy CBD location and the confines of the existing building, construction had to be carried out with minimal disruption to the Commonwealth Bank still operating on the ground floor and the building had extensive heritage-listed aspects,” said Mr David Ghannoum, Brookfield Multiplex Regional Managing Director, NSW.
Being appointed initially on an Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) basis allowed Brookfield Multiplex to jointly finalise the scope and design with Macquarie Group and other stakeholders and to identify opportunities to improve cost and program outcomes prior to construction beginning.
"Our collaboration with Macquarie Group some years ago to deliver the One Shelley Street office at King Street Wharf for their Banking and Financial Services Group provided a solid foundation for this project,” said Mr Ghannoum.

We decided to work with Brookfield Multiplex because of its reputation for delivering innovative and complex projects, as well as our prior experience working with them on our One Shelley Street offices.”
The project has achieved a 6 Star Green Star Design rating.
Completion took place mid-August 2014.
