Fortescue Metals Group's Christmas Creek mine site has been raided for drugs by West Australian police.

Fortescue chief executive Nev Power told ABC radio on Monday that police were at the airport with sniffer dogs checking people and luggage as they entered the mine site.

Mr Power said the company was working with police to provide them access to the site and company planes.  He said he was not aware of any arrests, but anyone found with drugs would be taken off site immediately.

“Any single person affected by drugs on our mine site is one too many,” Mr Power said.

Mr Power said he was concerned that drugs were continually infiltrating mine sites.

WA police regional commander Murray Smalpage said people could expect to see more police “action” as part of a community and industry-wide crack down on drugs.

WA Chamber of Minerals and Energy chief executive Reg Howard-Smith welcomed the strong police response.  Mr Howard-Smith said the use of use of illicit substances and alcohol were critical safety issues in the resources sector.

“If you are impaired by one of these substances while at work, you could be putting yourself and your colleagues at serious risk of injury or death,” he said.
