A major civil construction firm has been awarded the contract to construct a 6 hour battery in Western Australia.

Renewable energy provider Neoen and battery storage provider Tesla have selected CIMIC Group subsidiary UGL to build the 164 MW / 905 MWh Muchea Battery at Muchea north-east of Perth.

Set to become operational in 2027, the 154 MW/905 MWh battery will play an important role in Western Australia’s clean energy transition.

As with other batteries, it will store surplus energy generated by wind and solar assets during the day to be used during peak demand periods.

It will feature 252 Tesla Megapack 2XL units along with a 132kV substation.

The battery will be the first of Neoen’s facilities to deliver 6-hour storage.

The project award follows UGL’s completion of Neoen’s 341 MW/1,363 MWh Collie Battery 2, (also located in Western Australia), which commenced operations four months ahead of schedule.

The project is UGL’s nineth battery installation including its sixth for Neoen and Tesla.

All up, the firm has delivered 19 major renewable generation and storage projects across Australia.

UGL Managing Director Doug Moss welcomed the award.

“We’re supporting the energy transition through high-voltage transmission upgrades, regional electricity fortification, and the delivery of firming assets that strengthen the grid,” he said.

Construction will commence in October and is expected to finish in 2027.
