Free smoke alarms will be installed in tens of thousands of NSW homes, beginning in the state's Hunter region.

The Safety Visits Program by Fire and Rescue NSW will visit 60,000 homes across the state in the next 12 months, installing free smoke alarms where they are needed most.

As part of the prevention and education program, firefighters will kick off the service in Singleton on Monday, visiting about 1000 homes in the area before the program is rolled out elsewhere.
