Rory Martin, National Sustainability Manager with dwp Suters, has been named the Green Building Council of Australia’s (GBCA’s) 2014 ‘Future Green Leader’.

The award, announced today at the launch of the Future Green Leaders network in Sydney, aims to recognise upand-coming sustainability specialists in the property and construction sector.

“Rory Martin is an emerging leader who is making big waves in the sustainability space, and his passionate commitment to sustainability and exceptional achievements should inspire other young people to embrace sustainable thinking,” says GBCA Chief Executive, Romilly Madew.

With solid experience in design, consultancy, project delivery and industry standards Rory has delivered on projects across North America, Europe, Asia, the Middle East and Australia.

As National Sustainability Leader, Rory leads dwp Suters’ sustainability team and is charged with ensuring the holistic delivery of sustainability across project sectors and operations. A Green Star Accredited Professional, Rory is also responsible for policy development and implementation, design reviews, integration of environmental modelling within BIM practices, marketing, reporting and strategic planning.

The Future Green Leader Award was supported and judged by Australand and Interface.

Managing Director of Australand, Bob Johnston, says: ““The judging panel was impressed with the depth of Rory’s experience, the sustainable outcomes he has already achieved on a wide range of projects, and his thoughtful articulation of the opportunities presented by embracing sustainable thinking.”

Managing Director of Interface Australia Clinton Squires, says: “Rory is a ‘rising star’ of sustainability and deserves recognition for his commitment to buildings that respond to their climate, are economic anchors, aesthetically appealing and healthy places for people. This is the direction our future green leaders are facing.”

Passionate about embedding sustainability across the spectrum of the industry, Rory says “sustainability is an exciting, ever-changing area”. He argues that sustainable design is just good design – and is about finding solutions that “minimise environmental impact, provide greater social benefit for building occupants and users, while still meeting economic targets.”

Future Green Leaders was launched as part of annual World Green Building Week celebrations, which this year brings together 100 green building councils and 25,000 companies to ‘get up, green up’ the built environment.

“The Green Building Council of Australia would also like to thank Australand and Interface, both established leaders in sustainability, for supporting this award, which we hope will inspire the next generation to embrace sustainability, not just as a responsibility, but as a clear pathway to a better, brighter future,” Ms Madew concludes.
