A controversial multi-billion development proposed for publicly owned land on the Gold Coast looks set to face strong opposition from locals, according to new polling.

The Gold Coast City Council and the Queensland government are considering a $3 billion casino and residential development at the Spit at Southport.

But polling data released by Save Our Broadwater, which is strongly opposed to the development, shows less than one third of local residents support the project.

More than 58 per cent of the 1134 people surveyed by the ReachTel poll opposed developments more than three storeys high in the area.

The poll, conducted on September 12, also showed the Labor state government’s poll numbers remain dire on the Gold Coast, with only 27 per cent of respondents saying they would vote for the party if a poll was held today.
