An iconic new roof display has light up Sydney Harbour.

A test display of the lighting system on the roof of the new Sydney Fish Market has shown how the system will look when the roof is on full display.

Set to open later this year, the $750 million new market will cater for up to 6 million visitors each year – double the capacity of the current market.

It will offer a mix of retail and dining options including a fresh seafood market, restaurants and a seafood school.

From an architectural viewpoint, the standout feature will be its 200-metre-long floating roof canopy.

This takes on a wave-like form that reflects the motion of Sydney Harbour.

The roof is comprised of more than 400 cassettes, which collectively weigh a staggering 2.500 tonnes.

The project will also deliver a new waterfront promenade, an authentic fish market from catch to plate, a public market hall and delivery of up to 1,100 homes on the site of the old fish market.

Environmental features will include use of sunlight to illuminate upper levels during the day, rainwater collection for recycling and generating solar energy for the building’s energy consumption.

The lighting installation features over 400 individual light fixtures and more than four kilometres of cabling.

The recent test performance demonstrates how the roof cassettes can be individually lit to achieve multi-coloured and moving displays.

The lighting display will be activated to mark special events.

It could also be included as part of the Vivid Sydney festival or upcoming World Cups.

In addition to the roof lighting, additional public domain lighting will create a welcoming and vibrant environment.

The market is being delivered by Infrastructure NSW in conjunction with construction partner Multiplex.

It was designed by architects 3XN in conjunction with Sydney firms BVN and Aspect Studios.

Around 700 jobs have been created during construction and the market is expected to support around 700 jobs ongoing jobs in operation.
