The construction company behind London's Wembley Stadium is one of three firms short-listed to build the new Western Sydney Stadium.

The NSW government announced private sector firms Brookfield Multiplex, Lendlease and John Holland have been selected as the preferred consortia to vie for the contract to build the Parramatta venue.

Construction on the 30,000-seat stadium is expected to begin early next year, with the venue to open in 2019.

Formal requests for the tender will be issued shortly with the winning consortium expected to be announced later this year, Sports Minister Stuart Ayres said.

“A stage-one planning application will be submitted shortly followed by a period of community and stakeholder consultation to enable the community to find out more about the plans for the new stadium and provide feedback,” he said.

The development will replace the current Parramatta Stadium, built in 1986.
