Further design details for the new sports stadium in Brisbane that will sit at the heart of the 2032 Brisbane Olympics have been locked down.

The Queensland Government’s Games Independent Infrastructure and Coordination Authority (GIICA) has confirmed that design details of the new Brisbane Stadium have been decided upon.

The details include:

  • The stadium’s specific location and position within Victoria Park. This will be a central position near Gilchrist Avenue that maximises access to public transport and nestles the stadium in a naturally occurring amphitheatre.
  • The size and shape of the field of play. This will be the equivalent of the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).
  • An east-west configuration for the field orientation.

Set to open in time for the 2032 Brisbane Olympics, the new Brisbane Stadium at Victoria Park will have a seating capacity of 63,000 spectators and will serve as the main venue for the Brisbane 2032 Olympics.

During the Games, it will host the opening and closing ceremonies as well as athletics and para-athletics events.

It will also host AFL and cricket, and will be home to the Brisbane Lions, the Brisbane Heat and the Queensland Bulls.

According to GICCA, the selected location/positioning of the stadium and the selected size and dimensions of the field offer several advantages.

The proposed siting of the new stadium will seamlessly connect with existing transport infrastructure and allow it to be embedded into the existing topography.

This position will also reduce congestion in the critical northeast zone of the park where spectator entry points converge.

The east-west orientation for the field of play was settled after consultations with AFL and cricket as well as analysis of sun position, winds, and the overall stadium footprint.

This selected orientation optimises how the stadium will work on event days eliminates the requirement for a second media centre under combined AFL and cricket usage.

The announcement comes as work continues on the stadium early concept design.

Essentially speaking, the design responds to a desire to embed the new stadium into Victoria Park’s topography with a verandah inspiration, floating roof form, and bridge connectivity.

According to the Design Statement for the latest round of concepts, the stadium will sit in a valley between two ridges.

Spectators will pass through nature and parkland rather than climb toward a monument.

The park will flow over and around the venue. This will soften its edge and bind it to the park and forest slopes.

Concept designs will continue to be refined over coming months whilst early site preparation will begin in June and early works will begin later in 2026.

GIICA CEO Simon Crooks welcomed the latest progress.

“It is an exciting time for the team here at GIICA, and all of Queensland, as we work through the rigorous design process to bring the stadium vision to life, and later this year start early works and in 2027 construction,” Crooks said.
