Australia will have nine opportunities to take home an architectural “oscar” at this year’s 2015 Architizer A+Awards.

The Architizer A+Awards are the biggest award program in the architectural industry and was created in collaboration with WSJ. Magazine and The Webbys.

The awards are in their third year and recognise projects from across the globe. Projects are divided across 90 categories and selected by a 300 plus jury.

Jurors select five finalists and one winner in each category while the web community also selects a Popular Choice winner in each category.

The categories are split into three section:

The Typology – traditional building types (built projects completed in the last three years -since September 2011)

The Plus Categories – recognising the link between global issue and the structures that society builds;

The Product Categories – acknowledging that symbiosis between products and building.

Performing strongest in the Typology categories, below are the nine Australian projects shortlisted with project detail from Architizer and the respective design firms:

1. Glebe House, Sydney Australia by Nobbs Radford Architects

Typology Categories – Residential – Private House (M 1000-3000 sq ft)

This is a project that cleverly merges concrete and timber.

“A family home located in Sydney, this project is primarily focused on the interconnections of cloistered spaces, crated and selected framed openings.”

2. The Aria by MHN Design Union

Typology Categories – Residential – Multi Unit Housing – Mid Rise (5-15 Floors)
The Aria | MHN Design Union

Located in Bondi Junction, the project is an exemplar of the new type of housing which is being encouraged and built in the area.

“…The project is a dynamic sculpted apartment building that uses rhythm & form to create a positive presence on the street and in the surrounding area.”

3. Manning Road House, Melbourne Australia by Noxon Giffen

Typology Categories – Residential – Residential Interiors

The house is designed to accommodate a young family of five with additional space for visitors.

“Two interconnecting interior volumes are linked via a central 23 metre continuous linear skylight, generating a natural flow of movement through the spine of the house.”

4. Wollongong Central Development, Wollongong, Australia by HDR

Typology Categories – Commercial – Shopping Center

Designed to be at the hear of the urban transformation of the area, the centre’s “built form connects the northern and southern parts of the city via a five-level “Public Street” knitting together existing and future parts of the city, enlivening once quiet streets, and promoting new growth where it had never dreamed to exist.”

5. Hotel Hotel Lobby & Nishi Grand Stair Interior, Canberra, Australia by March Studio

Typology Categories – Hospitality – Hotels & Resorts

This project has already recognised by pictorial website, Distractify as one of 30 of the world’s captivating ceilings.

The space is composed of thousands repurposed timber’s lengths including the grand stair feature.

“In the stair the timer is heavy, grounded, a stacked agglomeration. Freed to scatter up the walls and across the ceiling, the suspended timber filters exterior light and views into and from internal spaces.”

6. Melbourne School of Design, University of Melbourne, Melbourne, Australia by NADAA and John Wardle Architects

Educational – Higher Education & Research Facilities

JWA and NADAAA were appointment architects for this project following an international design competition to design the new Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning Building for the university.

The building…comprises of 6 levels (basement plus five levels) and incorporates a two lecture theatres, workshop, library, two exhibition spaces, café, a series of studios over three levels, a studio hall and a series of associated academic and professional workspaces captured within the briefed 14,320m2 GFA.”

7. NEXTDC M1, Melbourne Australia by Greenbox Architecture

“The Melbourne facility is the largest independent colocation data centre in the city, with six data halls measuring 1,000m2 each and features a 400kW rooftop photovoltaic solar array – the largest privately funded installation in Australia, making it the first data centre in Asia Pacific to use solar power a s supplementary energy source.”

8. Dallas Brooks Community Primary School, Dallas Australia by McBride Charles Ryan

Plus Categories – Architecture + Learning & Architecture + Community

Architecturally, the architects interpreted this colourful school as a “walled city, linking small communal teach spaces with open courtyards”.

“The plan is arranged to produce several shared spaces, sheltered by the surrounding classrooms and community facilities.”

9. Trinity Apartments (West Footscray) by k20 Architecture

Plus Categories – Architecture + Low Cost Housing

This 24 apartment development is designed to “ensure equal access to daylight throughout, star ratings to 9 stars, common landscaped retreat designed by John Patrick Landscape Architecture and an exceptionally high level of sustainability”.
