Three new stations are now complete and have been handed over on one of Melbourne’s biggest railway tunnel projects.

On Thursday, builders for the Melbourne Metro Tunnel project handed the keys to Metro Trains for the stations of Arden, Parkville and Anzac on the $13.48 billion Metro Tunnel Project.

Set to open later this year, the project will complete an end-to-end rail link from Sunbury in Melbourne’s northwest to Cranbourne/Pakenham in the south east.

Specifically, it will connect the Sunbury line at Kensington in the inner northwest to South Yarra in the inner southeast via two 9kn twin tunnels and five new stations.

The handover of the three stations will enable Metro Trains to begin its preparations for the tunnel’s opening.

It will enable rail workers to ‘move in’ and begin to manage the stations’ assets and systems prior to opening.

Meanwhile, trains have now travelled more than 100,000 km inside the Metro Tunnel since testing began in mid-2023.

The testing aims to ensure that the tunnels and systems are working aa planned.

However, the project has not been without difficulties – something which the government attributes to COVID challenges.

All up, the project is $4 billion over budget and around one year late.

The projects is being delivered by the Cross Yarra Partnership – a consortium which is comprised of Lendlease Engineering, John Holland, Bouygues Construction and Capella Capital.

Victorian Premier Jacinta Allen welcomed the latest progress.

“The Metro Tunnel will cut congestion and get you to work, uni and home sooner – and it opens this year.” Allen said.

“We’ve got the keys from the builders, now our rail workers can move in and start getting ready for passengers.”
