A tradie has lost his foot after a workplace accident at an apartment building in Melbourne's west.

Miladin Adamovic, 40, had been working at the West Melbourne apartment development over the weekend when the undisclosed incident took place and he hospitalised, the Construction, Forestry, Maritime, Mining and Energy Union said on Monday.

Surgeons at the Royal Melbourne Hospital were unable to save the construction worker’s foot and he will need more surgery in the coming days.

“My husband’s injury has devastated our family. He simply went to work to provide for his family and now we’re dealing with this,” his wife Mirela said in a statement.

Union branch secretary Shaun Reardon visited the man in hospital on Monday.

“We are disturbed that ridiculous construction industry deadlines and restrictions on weekend work are putting workers at risk,” Mr Reardon said.

The union urgently wants to meet with industry stakeholders and the City of Melbourne.

The union and Worksafe Victoria are both investigating the incident.
