Winners of the Australian Institute of Architects’ 2013 National Architecture Awards
Recognised as Australia’s highest architecture accolades, the jury awarded 38 projects a total of 55 awards and commendations. Awards in each of the 12 national categories are based on a three tier system: the Named Award, the Architecture Award and a Commendation.
The winners were selected from 166 eligible award winners that progressed following Chapter Architecture Awards held earlier in the year with many of this years’ submissions, both small and commercial demonstrating a design focus on public spaces and community engagements according to the Institute.
“We were thrilled to see so many buildings and places that were engaging with social impacts beyond their immediate brief, offering something really significant to society at a higher level… architecture which is not merely responsible, but which is generous, Jury Chair, Shelley Penn said.
Shelley Penn (AIA immediate past national president) was joined on the jury panel by Richard Hassell (WOHA Singapore), Ben Hewett (South Australian Government Architect), Justine Clark (Parlour) and Sydney architect Hannah Tribe (Tribe Studio) to filter through the 60 projects that were shortlisted for the national awards.
Awarded projects included a range of tourism and community projects that were urban focused successfully connecting their structures to their surrounding environments.
Perth Arena by ARM & CCN – Joint Venture Architects was the only project to receive two Named Awards in INTERIOR ARCHITECTURE while also securing the Institute’s most prestigious award for an architecture project, The Sir Zelman Cowen Award for PUBLIC Architecture.
Other projects that received multiple recognition on the winners list include the recent revival of Hamer Hall in Melbourne that received a Named Award in the HERITAGE category and appears regularly among Architecture and Commendation Awards in the other categories.
