Five architecture teams have been shortlisted to design a memorial to remember those who died in the Grenfell Tower tragedy in London in 2017.

In its latest update, the Grenfell Tower Memorial Commission says that it has worked with the Royal Institute of Royal Institute of British Architects to narrow down an initial list of 28 multi-disciplinary architecture teams to design the Grenfell Tower Memorial.

In alphabetical order, the five teams are Curl La Tourelle + Head Architecture, Freehaus, George King Architects x Grow to Know, New South and Office Sian.

The Grenfell Tower Memorial will honour the 72 people who lost their lives in the Grenfell Tower tragedy in 2017.

The tower became engulfed in flames after a fire that broke out in the kitchen of Flat 16 spread to the external envelope of the building and then spread rapidly up the building’s exterior.

The fire’s rapid spread was driven by flammable cladding which had been attached to the concrete structure during a renovation.

A final report that was released last year after a seven year public inquiry found that the tragedy was a result of massive failures by a wide range of institutions, entities and individuals over many years.

Last year, the Commission launched the process to appoint the future design team for a ‘bold fitting and lasting memorial to the 72 victims of 14 June 2017’.

The final design team is expected to be announced during the coming Northern Hemisphere summer whilst the design is expected to be developed before a planning application is submitted in late 2026.

A community listening session will be held next month. This will enable bereaved families, survivors and immediate community members to meet with shortlisted teams.

In an update posted on its website, the Commission said that it had conducted due diligence to ensure that none of those who bore potential responsibility for the tragedy would be working on the wall.

“We have now robustly evaluated and moderated those applicants to reach a shortlist of teams that should have the right skills, capability and awareness of the Grenfell tragedy,” the update read.

“We have also conducted significant due diligence checks to make sure that any team, organisation or individual potentially working on the memorial does not bear any potential responsibility for the tragedy.

“Appointing a design team is a vital step in turning the Grenfell community’s vision for a future memorial into a physical reality. We are also all too aware of the importance of, in collaboration with the Grenfell community, appointing the right team, who will work professionally, sensitively and thoughtfully, with the Grenfell community.

“We are immensely grateful to those who have lost and who continue to endure so much, for giving their time to speak with us both previously and in the future. We appreciate the high demands on their time, including by the government regarding what will happen to Grenfell Tower in the future. We are here to hear from the Grenfell community at any time.

“The thoughts of the community are invaluable in selecting the right memorial design team and, later on, the right memorial design. This will help to make sure that the loved ones lost in the tragedy of 14 June 2017 are respectfully honoured and remain forever in the nation’s hearts and minds.”
