Secret, high-resolution cameras are now being installed in locations around Winnipeg to catch people illegally dumping trash.

Last month, council approved a two-year pilot project to use six closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras to identify offenders and their vehicles. The locations, which are being kept confidential, were determined through consultation with community stakeholders, city departments and enforcement officers.

The cameras will be shifted between several locations during the pilot.

“The goal of this pilot project is to help develop and maintain safe, orderly, viable and sustainable communities and to promote and maintain the health, safety and well-being of Winnipeggers,” states a news release from the city.
